is there a way to read ASE's log??

You can use dbcc log. This is an undocumented command -- search on the
internet for clues how to understand the output. If you have my book "Tips,
Tricks & Recipes for Sybase ASE", it contains various examples of how to
extract certain information elements from the log.

Don't forget the 3rd party products such as ProActive DBA by Whitesands
and Quest Foglight by Quest Technologies. Both will read the log in a
human readable format.
