Author Easerver and Xeon Processors.

Hi everybody.
I had and old Compaq server with Pentium processors, working with EAServer
as a web container and pb components container.
Almost two months ago we changed this server to a brand new Dell server with
Xeon processors...
I noticed that since we changed to this new server I'm getting a lot of this
issues in the jaguar.log:
Fatal error when trying to activate pb method
or
Fatal error when trying to deactivate pb method...
and pb heap managers error also.

I looked into the solved cases by sybase tech-support, and found a case when
someone mentioned that
there is a problem with EAServer and hyperthreading technology, which it's
the one used by
xeon processors.

has anyone had this same issue?
any experience with this?

Hyperthreading is pure trouble. I would recommend turning this off
immediately. You can do this easily in the BIOS.

Jorge;

The problem is not with Jaguar but rather with Sun's JVM. This is also
documented on Sun's web site. I think they have fixed this problem in JDK
1.5 - but I believe this version will not be used with EAServer until EAS
6.0. In the mean time you can do one of two things:

1) Turn hyperthreadfing off at the BIOS level (W2003 and XP only) or
2) Use the IMAGECFG.exe utility to assign EAServer specific CPU's (in this
case physical ones not logical).

Regards ... Chris

Chris,
Do you know the JVM's bug id?
I tried to find from the following site, I was not able to
find the one
you are mentioning.
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/index.jsp

Thanks in advance.

There are many problems logged against dual Xeon CPU's:

1) http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/vie...?bug_id=4772729
2) https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=46131
3 ) http://www.mainframeforum.com/t613933.html
4) http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/vie...?bug_id=4803222
5) https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=42986
6) http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/vie...?bug_id=5050798
7) etc

Take your pick .. I think the problem is spread over a few areas in the JVM.

For the general public I want to add to what Carson said. Hyperthreading with the current
JVM is a problem. We have production servers (EAS 4.2, PB9) that do not have
hyperthreading. They routinely run DataWindow reports that generate 100,000+ rows. A
client introduced a QA machine that has hyperthreading. It would fail to run the same
reports until hyperthreading was turned off.

Have you heard anything about a fix being created for this problem?

Nope.

This problem is acknowledged by SUN but I have not seen any fixes in the
JDK 1.4.x realm thus far.

Is this problem only hyperthreaded machines? Or any multi-CPU machine?

At least on XP the hyperthreading appears to the O/S as a second CPU.

Jim;

From my work on the new Xeon processor boxes, it seams to be the
hyper-threading that does the JVM in (note: it is not EAServer's fault, it's
the Sun JVM's problem). If you have a dual or quad Xeon configuration,
turning HT off but leaving the native dual or quad processor support active
stabilizes EAServer (JVM) considerably.

It should be noted though that you still need to have set the JVMOptions
property "carefully" in EAServer to properly address the remaining tuning
and stability issues under heavy load.
