| Hello,
I currently have a couple of databases in 2000 format that are split into
BE/FE and that have user-level security. Our IS department is in the process
of upgrading our office suit from 2002 to 2003. I read that it is not
necessary to convert my 2000 db's to 2003 because 2003 will read 2000
formats. However if I do opt to convert my databases, what is the process to
follow and do I have to compact and repair?
As you can see I am fairly new to this and I would like to get as much info.
as possible.
Thank You

| First, if you have not recently conducted a compact and repair, I would do it
right away. Corruption can creep into your DB slowly before it become
critical.
I have not migrate to Access 2003; however, I share your ideas that your SW
should migrate quite seamlessly.
I would first do a back-up of your FE and BE.
Then do a compact and repair and test the results. If the results are OK, I
would back-up this version of the data.
Having created and safely stored a back-up I would open your FE and link you
BE in Access 2003. IT will most likely ask you if you would like to upgrade,
I would select yes as you have a back-up of the previous version just in case
this does not work.
I would then test the new environment and do a compact and repair.
Finally, I would make a new back-up of the data after this compact and repair.
(Did I get you making too many back-up's? I figure I can always delete
redundant data with the simple press of a button. Recreating this data would
take many, many more button presses.)
Good Luck.

| Thanks for your info.
When I do compact and repair do I do it on both the FE and BE?

| You should just need to compact the backend. The frontend should not have
any data tables.
