Any help appreciated

The problem is when I connect to the internet on my laptop with xp it dails
up then I just get short beebs

but on my computer downstairs it rings up conects fine (with all that funny
noise).

I have looked at all the settings on my laptop and can't see anything
different to the tower computer.

Have you tried accessing the Internet using the laptop but connected to the
telephone socket downstairs?

If you can connect to the Internet with the laptop downstairs, it is likely
that you have reverse polarity in the telephone socket upstairs, espcially
if you use the old type of telephone socket.

OTOH, this newsgroup is for interaction between the Internet and Microsoft
Access, a database application and not for "accessing the Internet" and I am
by no means an expert on dial-up access to Internet. Suggest you re-post
your question in one the relevant newsgroups for Internet (access).
