MS Access over the Net through VPN

Hi, Guys,
I have an Access Database(file) which is about 1Mb(may increase to
around 10Mb) in size. For security reason, I have to place the
file(.mdb format) in another location, linked by VPN(server side is
only Windows XP Pro) over ADSL(server side upstream is 128K) through
the Net.
At the moment, I connect through the VPN and get into the share folder
and open the file, but the database operation is very slow. Within the
database, there are only a few tables, forms, 5 macro and a few short
line of codes in it, also there are only around 200 records in the
largest table.
I would like to find out is there any solution that can speed up the
database operation.
Many thanks,
Ben

I'm affraid Access i very poorly suited for connections over VPN. I've
experienced it just like you.
I'd also be very interested if someone knows how to speed it up.
I think the options are to have it on LAN, use replication if that's an
option or create a web access to the database using for example ASP.

| An ADSL connection at 128K is about one hundred times slower than a standard
LAN connection (add another 10 times for the latest Gigabit Ethernet
connection); hence the huge difference in speed.
If you have money$, another solution other than ASP or ASP.NET or the like
would be to use Terminal Server or Citrix on a powerful machine.

Thanks Guys,
Thanks for the back ground info that you guys offers.
so if I use realVNC over the Net will do the same too, right? then will
bring up another query, between the thin client and the Web base
assess(such as ASP..)which one will be more efficient? and still,
faster, more reliable and secuer?
I am also aware of that within the MS Access, it also can creat the WEB
pages to connect with the main database too, how good is it again,
compare to the full on ASP re-writing?(or they are the simular stuff?
sorry, I am a new comer)
Many thanks
Ben

| VNC (or PC-Anywhere) is not the same thing as TS or Citrix because only one
person can use VNC at a time.
For the distinction between a thin client and a web base assess, they are to
many factors to take account to give you an answer on that.
For the DAP (Data Access Pages) pages created by Access, they are a lot of
trouble and cannot be used easily over the Internet (WAN), only over a LAN.
See the newsgroup m.p.a.dataaccess.pages for more info on them.
Between DAP, ASP or ASP.NET, you should go with ASP.NET. For TS or Citrix,
these can be a good solution if you have some money to pay for their
licences and buy a powerfull machine.

I find Microsoft OS is major ripe-off to the poor.
For instant, I spend almost all my saving upgrade my hardware by force
because the bought an needed add in card that required more power pc
which win9x would support. The bundle cost me a fortune and I thought,
the investment is for long shot.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. Almost alll my older win9x
applications in the old pc are not compatible to winXP at least one way
or the other, forces to upgrade with my credit card. I wonder how long
am I going to pay them off.
Well, my nightmare isn't stop here, when come to networking such as
mentioned above, those free VNC aren't work well in winXP for PC dummy
and I couldn't use webbased service becasue all of them could perform
the task I wanted. Access the mpeg4 with ActiveX script gave me blank on
the client, see nothing.
Microsoft is a ring leader to entire ripe-off world in softwares and
hardwares world. Unlike Linux, BSD, all common applications are bundle
with it so users could save for something really needed. I really hope
other software vendors and hardwares makers move forward to support BSD
and Linux to ease the financial burden from poor working class people
than keep helping Bill Gates and his affilates unethically laughing all
the way to the bank.
