Author can't view folders on explorer (windows or Internet)

All,

I have a system (windows 2000, sp4) where I can't view the folders/files on
the left pane. If you open explorer (windows or Internet) and click on the
folders button, nothing appears. However if you click on search, that will
work. If I open windows or Internet explorer and select view, then go to
explorer bar and try selecting folders, it won't work either. However,
anything else I select works fine. This problem points to the registry but
don't know where in the registry to look at.

I've re-installed service pack 4 thinking that might do it, but that didn't
work. I thought about removing and re-installing Internet explorer, however
the problem is on both windows explorer and internet explorer.

Anyone have any ideas. If so, please assist.

Thaniks in advance for any help you can offer.

Robbie

Can you see the folders when booted to Safe Mode? Does the window pane open
and is empty, or does the pane not appear either?

We have exactly the same problem on one of our W2000 Servers, when you try
to view folders the only thing showing is a grey area instead of the folder
tree?? I haven't tried it in Safe Mode due to it's a 'Don't touch' server
running a 24 hour application.
