Author Dreamweaver templates? Dependence Danger?

I picked up that one of our designers is using extensive use of DW templates
which are being stored in an online /templates/ folder.

I see that there are now at least 50 of these templates.

Can anyone tell me if this is a potential problem in terms of:

1. Becoming dependent on DW templates in order for the site to work?

2. If one of these templates were to be deleted what would happen?

Is it wise for our entire site to be threaded with these templates?
