Author Checking for locked record before update allowed?

I have a medium complex database that is shared by 6-10 users. One user
enters information (creates a new record) and the rest of the users have a
button to push which records date & time the button was pushed and changes a
"status" field.

My question is how I can check to make sure that someone else isn't editing
the record (has it locked) before the next person is updating it - so that I
don’t get that annoying error message.

Thanks
