Performance Issues

| We have an Access 97 application that performs quite slow on the network.
The app is split into a FE and BE and there is a persistent connection from
the FE to the BE.
I think this is mostly a result of our network. Our desktops are configured
at 10 Mbps. I explained that increasing this setting to 100 Mbps would
improve performance. Management doesn't agree this will help. I would think
this should boost performance approx 10 times. Is this correct or have I
missed something. Any comments or articles on this would be greatly
aprreciated. Thanks.

It would most definitely help if the reason for slowness is the time it
takes to pull records over the network. It is also possible that design
changes could provide as large or larger of a speed increase if proper
indexing and other design considerations have not been implemented as well
as they should be.

Definitely worth a try. Make sure you're using switches not hubs. They
probably no longer sell hubs these days. But if you're still on a 10Mbps
network, you may be using hubs.

| No doubt the LAN speed upgrade will make a big difference, but if you
haven't already done so, take a look at:

by Tony Toews. The tips and tricks there can deliver a much more
spectacular improvement.

Thanks but I suspect you meant

Good.

There is definitely a major difference in performance between 10 mpbs
and 100 mpbs. It won't be 10 times but definitely much, much better.
On a previous laptop the network card auto sense didn't work properly
at one particular clients. It was quite slow. Once I notice only the
10 mpbs light being on I forced the connection speed to 100 mpbs and
performance was much, much better.
