Problem importing text field, leaving out those starting with lett

I am importing a Fixed Length Text file, which imports ok, however it is not
pulling in all items of one field. The field is a patient number field which
contains mostly numbers, but there are some patient numbers that begin with
letters. These are the ones it is leaving out. I have tried importing it as
text but still will not bring those patient numbers in. Any suggestions?
