Support Forum for database administrators and web based access to important newsgroups related to databasesToday I tried installing SQL Server 2005 as a separate instance along side m y pre-existing SQL Server 2000 (which I'm still using to support production). Everything worked fine until the installation got to checking what my machine already had. At that point I was informed that Workstation Components, Books Online and development Tools were already installed and received the following cryptic message: Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP Allowed Action: Maintain (Action is only available from Add or Remove Programs) Reason: Cannot maintain product, to maintain the product go to Add or Remove Programs After un-checking the Workstation Components, etc the install proceeded without incident - unfortuantely you really need the Workstation components et.al. if you want to manage the dtaabases/instance, etc. So, is there anything (short of installing this on another box...) that I could do to get this apparent conflict resolved? It seems odd that MS would provide the means to install the data engines (2000/2005) side-by-side but have a conflict with the management tools.... Thanks
Post Follow-up to this messageFor questions about SQL Server 2005, it's best to use the following microsoft.private.sqlserver2005.* newsgroups: http://communities.microsoft.com/ne...p=sqlserver2005 Regarding this problem, I have posted a message on May 29, in microsoft.private.sqlserver2005.setup, with the subject "Confusing setup message about existing components". It seems to me that it's a conflict between SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition and SQL Server 2005 Tools ANOTHER Edition, which can be solved by uninstalling "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP" and reinstalling the "Workstation Components, Books Online and development Tools" in the "other" SQL Server 2005 Edition. Post Follow-up to this messageRazvan, thanks to the reply - that was exactly the issue! After uninstall/reinstall the CTP works fine. One catch - it didn't provide any sample databases (though I selected that option). The AdventureWorks Db that I found couldn't be added to my SQL 2005 instance (wrong version). Are there any sample databases Northwind, Pubs, AdventureWorks that I could download and install? You might try downloading this version of AdventureWorks. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en And here's the download page for pubs and Northwind. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en -- Gail Erickson [MS] SQL Server Documentation Team This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights "Glenn" <Glenn@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A36CDBB5-A68F-40BA-8B44- 5C2561A82F24@microso ft.com... > Razvan, thanks to the reply - that was exactly the issue! > > After uninstall/reinstall the CTP works fine.
